What type of wood would you use? Alder, maple, oak, cherry, etc. Most cabinets these days, at least around here, are made from alder because it is a cheap, very soft wood that can be stained and glazed very easily. We have had knotty alder in the last 3 places we have lived and I haven't minded it. But everyone I talk to says to stay away from alder because it gets beat up so easy. I am thinking of going with a maple or cherry wood. What do you think?

Stain/Glaze? I know I want to glaze my cabinets and depending on the wood I go with I may want to stain as well. Did you know that glazing, staining, or applying toner is an upgrade. Some places charge you just once and will stain and glaze for you, while other places hit you up separately for each one.
Color? I know many of you weren't a fan of my before mentioned idea of adding some color to one section of cabinets. For those of you, I am sorry because I am very strongly leaning towards it. Like I said before I will probably be doing a dulled down shade of turquoise. So that leads me to what shade. Keep in mind I will be applying a glaze over the color.

Next up drawer and cupboard style!
What a fun project you get to do. Although it does sound really stressful.

I love maple wood. But if you are going with the turqoise I think the lightest shade of black walnut looks best.
ReplyDeleteStain v. Glaze? I honestly don't know what the difference is. Maybe go with the cheapest? Since the cabinets are more expensive than you thought, it might be good to save money where you can.
As far as the color shade, I like the very lightest best. And the shade directly to the left (the bottom color) second best. But I'm one who likes my kitchen to be light and airy.
Good luck!
I like the hard maple and actually like the lightest walnut. I like cherry but if you're having turquoise in your house be careful about getting to much of a red tint with your wood. The complimentary colors will make the red stand out, but it will make the turquoise pop.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color of wood was in that magazine you showed me that had a sea green with a stain and some wood color next to it..... remember?
What did you decide about Rexburg man?
This is just what I like. I like the two shades on the left(the top and the middle one) I love both the lightest maple and the lightest cherry.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how expensive cabinets are. No wonder I will not be redoing my kitchen any time soon.
